Shows, exhibitions, illuminations … There are plenty of great cultural outings in Paris during the Christmas 2023 holiday season.

The holiday season is the perfect time to discover a host of not-to-be-missed events: shows, exhibitions, circuses, festivals...

The end of year celebrations in 2023 are marked by the programming of numerous cultural events: exhibitions, shows, circuses... Not forgetting the Christmas animations in certain castles, the illuminations and the Christmas shop windows. Below is a selection of some of the events to enjoy in Paris at the end of 2023.

Chagall - Paul Klee / Oceans - Atelier des Lumières

This winter, the Atelier des Lumières are offering a double bill. In the morning, this immersive museum invites visitors to discover the fascinating colourful worlds of artists Chagall and Paul Klee to the sound of music. In the afternoon, there is a change of scene as visitors plunge 20,000 leagues under the sea with ‘Ocean Odyssey. The Immersive Adventure’. These unique digital photos celebrating the wonders of the oceans will delight kids as well as adults.

Louis Janmot / Van Gogh at Auvers-sur-Oise - musée d'Orsay

For the end of the year, the Musée d’Orsay throws the spotlight on two very different artists in two temporary exhibitions. The first, looks at the last months of the life of Van Gogh at Auvers-sur-Oise, during which he produced 74 paintings and 33 drawings including the ‘Portrait of Dr Paul Gachet’, ‘The Church at Auvers’, and the ‘Wheatfield with Crows’. The second highlights the great work ‘The Poem of the Soul’ by Lyon artist Louis Janmot. A poetic journey to take at the Musée d’Orsay.

Modern Paris (1905-1925) - Petit Palais

The third part of its trilogy devoted to Paris (After Romantic Paris (1815-1858) and Paris 1900), this exhibition highlights the important place of Paris in the world of art and culture in the early 20th century. Fashion, cinema, photography, painting, sculpture, drawing, dance, design, architecture, and industry … Different themes are addressed to reveal all the modernity of the City of Light.

The Fondation Louis Vuitton presents 115 works by the artist Mark Rothko from his first figurative works to his last abstract paintings. A wonderful chronological exhibition in keeping with the DNA of the Foundation.

Felines - Grande Galerie de l'Evolution / Muséum National d’Histoire Naturelle

Domestic and wild cats, their relationships with other species and humans, history, evolution, and characteristics … The Muséum National d’Histoire Naturelle reveals all the secrets of the 38 feline species of the great cat family in a fun and informative exhibition. Animal lovers of all ages are in for a treat!

Nicolas de Staël - musée d'Art Moderne

‘A toi de faire ma mignonne.’ (‘Over to you sweetie’) Carte blanche to Sophie Calle - musée Picasso

To mark the 50th anniversary of the death of the famous Spanish artist, the Musée Picasso gives carte blanche to the artist Sophie Calle, who creates a dialogue between their respective works. Photographs, drawings, serigraphs, sculptures, installations … The exhibition is spread over the 4 floors of the museum and offers a new perspective of the two artists.

Picasso. Dessiner à l'infini - Centre Pompidou

To mark the 50th anniversary of the death of Pablo Picasso, the exhibition ‘Picasso. Dessiner à l’infini’ (‘Picasso. Infinite Drawing’) showing at the Centre Pompidou, explores this aspect of the master’s art. Some 1,000 works: drawings, notebooks, and engravings, offer another insight into the artist’s oeuvre. From November, districts of the City of Light are illuminated. The famous Christmas lights on the Avenue des Champs-Élysées launch the festive season, and there are sublime installations in districts like Montmartre or in Bercy Village as well as lights and decorations in the capital’s loveliest squares like Place Vendôme … All you have to do is to take a stroll to find the magic of Christmas in Paris.

The Bon Marché, the BHV, the Samaritaine, the Printemps, Galeries Lafayette … Department stores are decked out in all their finery for the festive season. Not to miss for their festive window displays and their interior decorations.
