Originating in Germany and the Alsace, Christmas markets have spread across Europe since the 1990s. They have gradually become an essential part of the festive season in Paris and offer unique gift ideas, items made by designers and local artisans** (Christmas decorations, handmade jewellery, accessories, wooden toys, ceramic or leather objects, etc.), as well as culinary specialities from French regions and fine food products. They often feature festive events, concerts, shows, creative workshops and craft demonstrations, and of course the most eagerly awaited event for children, a visit to Father Christmas!
The Christmas markets take place in Paris from November to the end of December and can last for a day, a weekend or even several weeks, depending on their location.
Christmas markets are held in some of the capital's most iconic locations such as the Tuileries Gardens, the esplanade at La Défense, at the bottom of the hill at Montmartre, near to Notre-Dame de Paris cathedral, in the districts of Saint-Germain-des-Prés, and La Villette, on the square in front of Paris City Hall and also in other hybrid and third place venues in the Greater Paris region including the Hasard Ludique, Cité Fertile, and Pavillon des Canaux.
