A Look at the Life of Sculptor Auguste Bartholdi and His Monumental Work: the Statue of Liberty
The Musée d'Orsay is celebrating the 250th anniversary of U.S. independence with the exhibition “Auguste Bartholdi. Liberty Enlightening the World.” On view from 15 September to 31 January 2027, the exhibition traces the career of French sculptor Auguste Bartholdi and the creation of his monumental work: the Statue of Liberty, a gift from France to the United States to celebrate the centennial of American independence in 1876. Visitors will also learn about the various steps involved in designing what was, at the time, the tallest statue in the world (46 meters high, 93 meters including its pedestal). The virtual reality experience “A Statue for Liberty: Bartholdi’s Dream, from Paris to New York” rounds out the exhibition.
