Built for the 1900 Universal Exhibition, the Petit Palais building, a masterpiece by architect Charles Girault, became the Musée des Beaux-Arts de la Ville de Paris in 1902. It boasts a fine collection of paintings, sculptures, furniture and objets d'art dating from Antiquity to 1914. Its treasures include an exceptional collection of Greek vases and a very important group of 17th-century Flemish and Dutch paintings based around Rembrandt's famous Self-Portrait with a Dog. Its magnificent collection of French paintings from the 18th and 19th centuries includes major works by Fragonard, Greuze, David, Géricault, Delacroix, Courbet, Pissarro, Monet, Sisley, Cézanne and Vuillard. In the field of sculpture, the museum boasts some very fine Carpeaux, Carriès and Dalou collections. The decorative arts collection is particularly rich in Renaissance and 1900s pieces, including glassware by Gallé, jewellery by Fouquet and Lalique, and the dining room designed by Guimard for his town house. The museum also boasts a fine collection of graphic arts, including complete series of engravings by Dürer, Rembrandt and Callot, and a rare collection of Nordic drawings.
