❓Frequently asked questions

The origins of this tradition: why do we go on an Easter egg hunt?

This tradition dates back to ancient civilisations, which offered eggs in spring to symbolise new life and the rebirth of nature. In Christianity, the egg represents the resurrection of Christ. Until the 17th century, the Church did not allow eggs to be eaten during Lent, leading to a stockpile that was distributed at Easter. Legend has it that the bells sent to Rome bring the eggs back to the gardens on Easter Sunday.

When does the Easter egg hunt take place?

The egg hunt traditionally takes place on Easter Sunday, the main day of this family celebration. However, some egg hunts may be organised on Easter Monday, which is a public holiday in France. In Paris, events generally take place over the Easter weekend, from Saturday to Monday, offering three days to enjoy this joyful spring tradition. It is advisable to check the website of the venue you are interested in before heading there.

Does the Easter egg hunt take place on Easter Sunday or Easter Monday?

Easter egg hunts organised in Paris and the Île-de-France region attract large numbers of children. To cater for as many people as possible, most of them take place throughout the Easter weekend, on Saturday, Sunday and Monday. There may be several sessions on the same day to accommodate young participants, or egg hunts tailored to the children’s ages.

Where can I go on an Easter egg hunt?

Paris and the Île-de-France region offer a wide range of options for this egg hunt: in the gardens of the Musée de Montmartre, the Musée de l’Homme, the parks of the châteaux of Vaux-le-Vicomte and Chantilly, at the Jardin d’Acclimatation, the Buttes Chaumont, in wildlife parks (Parc Zoologique de Paris, the Aquarium de Paris…), shopping centres such as Bercy Village, certain restaurants and grand hotels, which also organise special events over the Easter weekend.

Are Easter egg hunts in Paris free?

Easter egg hunts organised in Paris and the Île-de-France region may be free or open to all once the venue’s admission fee has been paid. Some of them require a fee. It is best to check before you go. Please note that booking is compulsory for some Easter egg hunts.

How can children take part in an Easter egg hunt in Paris?

Participants in Easter egg hunts are asked to book their places and time slots in advance to facilitate access to the event. Some Easter egg hunts can also be booked on the spot on the day itself. Please note that in some cases, children must be accompanied by their parents to take part in the activity.

What prizes can be won after taking part in the egg hunts?

After an exciting egg hunt, children can swap their finds – usually small, colourful plastic eggs - for a small gift. The haul usually consists of a bag of delicious chocolate eggs, sweets or even small games.
