The studios at 12-14 rue Cortot were meeting places and home to many artists, including Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Fauves Charles Camoin, Émile-Othon Friesz and Raoul Dufy, Émile Bernard, Suzanne Valadon and Maurice Utrillo.
The Musée de Montmartre was created in 1960 in the Butte's oldest building, dating from the 17th century, and houses a unique collection of paintings, posters and drawings by Toulouse-Lautrec, Modigliani, Kupka, Steinlen, Valadon and Utrillo.
The tour explores the history of the Butte, the artistic effervescence of its studios and the atmosphere of its famous cabarets. The Hôtel Demarne, a handsome residence from the Directoire era, has been completely redesigned to host temporary exhibitions and the Café Renoir.
Just a stone's throw from Place du Tertre, the three Jardins Renoir surround the Musée de Montmartre and overlook the vineyards. They offer an exceptional view of the Clos Montmartre vineyard and, beyond, of the vast plain north of Paris.
