Shopping with no VAT: how to benefit from tax-free goods?

🎯Who is entitled to Tax-Free goods ?

Leisure travellers whose usual place of residence is in a country outside the European Union are entitled to have VAT deducted from the purchases that they have made in France. The visitor concerned must be aged 16 or more and be visiting France for a period of less than 6 months.

🎯Prepare your shopping spree well

The purchases, of a touristic nature, must be made over a maximum of 3 days, at a retailer that offers tax free shopping and in the the same brand (or group of brands) for an amount exceeding €100 (since 1st January 2021), inclusive of tax. The retailer then tells the buyer what they must do in order to claim back the VAT and gives them the sales slip for export. The buyer must show their passport to the retailer in the shop to prove their non-resident status.

🎯How to get a tax refund

To be entitled to a tax refund, you must present the duty-free slip at customs on leaving France. You may be asked to produce the objects purchased so that they can be verified. You can easily obtain an electronic duty-free slip by using the Pablo terminals at the airports.

For an immediate VAT refund, you should present all your documents at the tax refund desk at the airport, the port or the train station from which you are departing. Otherwise, you must send the documents by post to a tax refund office such as Global Blue France.

  • Customs information telephone numbers: +33 (0) 8 00 94 40 40 from mainland France or +33 (0) 1 72 40 78 50 outside mainland or from abroad

🎯A last piece of advice before leaving the EU via France

Allow the necessary time for refund formalities to avoid stress on the day of departure. The visitor must take the sales slip for export to complete these formalities at customs before checking in baggage and before the end of the third month following the date of purchase.

Passengers who do not leave the European Union via France, and who travel via international rail can also claim the VAT back! All the details can be found on the dedicated page of the Ministry of Finance and Public Accounts.

❓Frequently asked questions

How much is the tax refund in France?

The VAT refund represents between 10% and 15% of the total price of your purchases, after deduction of service charges. For example, for a luxury bag costing €500, you can get up to €75 back. French regulations set a minimum spending threshold of €100 including VAT in the same shop over a maximum period of three days. This amount applies only to non-consumable goods intended for export. Rates vary depending on the retailer and tax refund operator.

How do I obtain a tax refund in France?

To benefit from the tax refund, bring your passport with you when you make your purchases. The sales assistant will issue an electronic slip with a unique barcode. When you leave, go to the PABLO terminal located near the customs desk before checking in your luggage. Scan your slip for electronic validation. Keep your goods easily accessible: they may be checked. Refunds are made according to the method chosen in the shop: credit to your bank card or cash refund at dedicated counters at airports. The slip must be validated within three months of purchase.

How does tax refunds work on jewellery purchases in France?

Tax refunds on precious metal jewellery are subject to specific rules. An approved jeweller may offer you the option of purchasing directly tax-free, without paying VAT in advance, in exchange for a deposit cheque. This convenient option avoids the need for subsequent refund procedures. Regulations require that jewellery be transported in your personal luggage when leaving the country.

Where can you get a tax refund in France?

Tax-free purchases are validated at PABLO terminals, located at the main points of exit from French territory. These automatic terminals are located in Paris airports. A Travelex office is available at Paris airports for immediate refunds. The Paris Regional Customs Office, located on Rue Raoul Wallenberg, handles special cases requiring regularisation.
