Jardin des Tuileries

The Jardin des Tuileries takes its name from the tile factories that once stood on the site where Queen Catherine de Médicis had the Tuileries Palace built in 1564, a palace that no longer exists today. From 1664 onwards, the king's famous gardener André Le Nôtre gave it its current French garden appearance. The garden, bordered by the Seine and separating the Louvre Museum from the Place de la Concorde, is a place for Parisians and tourists to stroll and enjoy culture, where statues by Maillol stand alongside those by Rodin and Giacometti. The two pools are ideal for relaxing. To the south-west of the Tuileries is the Musée de l'Orangerie, where visitors can admire works by Monet. From March to December, free tours in French only are organised to discover this unique testimony to French history. And for fans of candyfloss, merry-go-rounds and thrills, there's the Tuileries Festival from June to August.

Did you know?
The Tuileries Gardens, where the Olympiad of the Republic was conceived in 1793, played a part in Olympic history by hosting the epee tournament at the 1900 Games, where for the first time three medals of different colours were awarded, thus inspiring the principle of three medals for the top three finishers in an event.
