🎯What is drag?

Drag is a cross-dressing show in which men create a female drag queen identity or women create a male drag king identity using make-up, outrageous outfits and accessories. Both are all about extravagance and exaggeration for the purpose of acting and/or performance. As well as being entertaining, drag also has a social and political purpose, fighting discrimination, promoting equality and, more generally, defending the rights of the LGBTQIA+ community.

Over time, the drag world has developed its own set of codes, a hierarchy, trends, different shows and even a colourful vocabulary, including pageant, ballroom, voguing, house, slay, lipsync, club kid and queer… Drag shows can include song, dance, theatre and lipsync.

After being sidelined for a long time, drag is now highly popular. The success of RuPaul Drag Race, a TV show adapted in France in 2022 under the name Drag Race France, hosted by the famous Nicky Doll, played a big part in this. Previously confined to specific events such as the Marches des fiertés, beauty contests or specialist clubs, drag queens now perform throughout Greater Paris in cabarets, nightclubs and even during bingo brunches!

❓Frequently asked questions

What does ‘Drag’ mean?

There are several explanations regarding the origin of the word drag. The first is that it comes from the long dresses worn by English actors playing female roles in Shakespeare's plays in the 16th and 17th centuries. Dresses were so long that they drag(ged) on the floor. Another explanation suggests that it is an acronym of Dress Like A Girl.

What are the origins of Drag?

Although the origins of cross-dressing date back to ancient times, when men dressed as women for certain ceremonies, it also enjoyed great popularity in Shakespearean theatre, where female roles were played by men. It was later in the 19th century that drag culture really emerged, initiated by a former slave, William Dorsey Swann, the self-proclaimed Queen of Drag, who organized popular dances for the queer community. The drag movement really took off in 1990, then made a comeback with the launch of the reality TV show RuPaul’s Drag Race, in 2009.

Which are the most welcoming places to party in Paris?

Combating gender-based and sexual violence and discrimination, promoting respectful and caring parties ... The Parisian nightlife scene is evolving and striving to become a safer place for all. These commitments are supported by the label Fêtez Clair and various associations.

What is the difference between a cross-dresser and a drag queen?

A transvestite wears clothing of the opposite sex in their daily life, often as a form of personal expression. This practice may be occasional or regular and does not necessarily involve public performance. A drag queen develops a complete artistic persona with extravagant costumes, theatrical makeup, and stage performances. This persona becomes an integral part of a show in which exaggeration and performance dominate. Drag queens master singing, dancing, theatre and mise en scène to create memorable shows in Parisian cabarets.
