La Caverne du Pont-Neuf: JR's monumental immersion

La Rédaction Paris je t'aime - Updated on
In June 2026, JR will transform the Pont Neuf into a monumental cave. An immersive tribute to Christo and Jeanne-Claude, combining technology and heritage

>Last-minute update: the Caverne du Pont Neuf is now open to the public!

The event promises to be one of the highlights of the Parisian cultural season. By transforming this iconic thoroughfare into a 120-metre-long urban cave, French artist JR is not just changing the landscape; he is creating a dialogue between historical heritage and contemporary art, accessible to all, free of charge, day and night.

🎯The genesis of a monumental project: JR's tribute to Christo

📌Artistic lineage

More than forty years after the historic wrapping of the Pont Neuf by Christo and his wife Jeanne-Claude in 1985, JR is reviving this tradition of monumental public art. La Caverne du Pont Neuf is directly inspired by the Lutetian limestone quarries - the famous ‘stone of Paris’ - from which the bridge itself, completed in 1607, was built. The artist thus seeks to highlight the geological origins of Parisian architecture by juxtaposing the ‘wild’ with the refinement of the capital, creating a fascinating dialogue between past and present.

📌JR and Paris, inseparable

La Caverne du Pont Neuf is part of an artistic cycle whose works have left their mark on the capital and its heritage: the creation of spectacular trompe-l'oeil at the Louvre (2019) and installation on the façade of the Opéra Garnier (2023), the artist continues to question our relationship with the city by opening ‘breaches’ in our most familiar monuments.

💡Did you know?

To ensure the success of this complex installation, a full-scale testing phase was conducted in January 2026 in a historic hangar at Paris-Orly Airport. In this space, once dedicated to aircraft maintenance, JR and his teams deployed a 15-metre-high prototype to adjust the structure, sound and lighting. This rigorous approach is reminiscent of Christo and Jeanne-Claude's working methods.

🎯La Caverne du Pont Neuf: what to expect?

More than just a visual installation, La Caverne du Pont Neuf is a temporary structure that redefines the passage between the right bank and the left bank. Designed as a geological outgrowth sprouting from the asphalt, the work consists of a high-tech inflatable structure covered with a textured canvas that perfectly imitates the steep walls of old Parisian limestone quarries.

The public is invited to experience the work in two complementary ways:

  • From the outside: as they walk along the quays, visitors discover an organic and wild silhouette that contrasts with the usual lines of the Pont Neuf
  • From the inside: visitors walk into a 120-metre immersive tunnel, where the atmosphere, the play of light and the uneven walls create a feeling of total disorientation

📌 The Pont Neuf Cavern in figures

This engineering feat is impressive in its dimensions:

  • Floor space: 2,400 m² covering the oldest bridge in the capital
  • Span: a 120-metre-long tunnel 20 metres wide
  • Structure: 20,000 m² of air hold up 18,900 m² of technical fabric
  • Height: rocky peaks soaring up to 18 metres high
  • 800 people are involved in the JR project

💡Did you know?

As well as his installation at the Pont Neuf, JR has designed the official poster for Roland-Garros 2026. Unveiled on 19 March, this design combines the texture of clay courts with his famous photographic collage. Between the limestone of the old bridge and the ochre of the courts, the artist is leaving a double mark on the Parisian landscape this June 2026.

📌Renowned collaborations!

To complete the immersion, JR called on renowned collaborators. Thomas Bangalter (formerly of Daft Punk) – deeply marked at the age of 10 by the 1985 wrapping of the Pont Neuf – composed a specific sound identity. For its part, Snap Inc.'s AR Studio Paris offers an augmented reality experience: via your smartphone, the walls of the cave come to life, revealing perspectives hidden behind the canvas.

📌La Caverne du Pont Neuf: eco-friendly design

True to Christo's philosophy, the project is entirely financed by private funds and the sale of JR's works. The environmental impact has been minimised: a lightweight inflatable structure limiting transport, canvases printed locally in France with solvent-free water-based inks, raw materials manufactured in Europe and a second life already planned for the materials after 28 June 2026.

📌A bustling cultural calendar

June gets off to a flying start with Nuit Blanche. The month continues with the Fête de la Musique (21 June 2026) and Fashion Week (23 to 28 June 2026), making Paris the global epicentre of creativity for the entire duration of the installation.

❓Frequently asked questions

Who is the artist JR?

JR is a French artist internationally renowned for his monumental photographic collages in public spaces. From the US-Mexican border to the Louvre, his humanistic work aims to engage citizens and change the way we see the world.

Why is this project called ‘La Caverne’ (The Cave)?

It is a reference to Plato's allegory of the cave, but also a tribute to the stone quarries of Paris that made it possible to build the bridge.

Why was the Pont Neuf chosen for this installation?

The Pont Neuf is doubly symbolic: it is the oldest stone bridge in Paris, completed in 1607, and the first to incorporate pavements for pedestrians. By transforming it into a ‘Cave’, JR goes back to the very origins of the city, using the aesthetics of limestone, the stone extracted from local quarries that was used to build the famous bridge.

What is the connection between JR and the couple Christo and Jeanne-Claude?

JR designed this installation as a direct tribute to the fortieth anniversary of The Pont Neuf Wrapped (1985). The couple's nephew, Vladimir Yavachev, is also involved in the project. This work follows a year in 2025 celebrating the legacy of the artist couple: the 90th anniversary of their birth (both born on 13 June) and the anniversaries of their iconic projects in New York and Berlin. In 1985, the wrapping of the Pont Neuf attracted three million visitors; forty years later, JR's ‘Caverne’ revives its memory and audacity.

What to do in Paris in June 2026 after or before seeing the Cavern?

In addition to JR's work, enjoy the banks of the Seine, Nuit Blanche on 6 June 2026 and the many pop-up terraces that spring up in the Marais district and Saint-Germain-des-Prés.

Can I take photos of the installation?

Absolutely! JR encourages the public to become ‘co-authors’ of the work by sharing their photos and sensory experiences.

Can people use the Pont Neuf whilst JR’s installation is being set up?

Access to the Pont Neuf and the surrounding area will be restricted from 11 May to 13 July 2026 to allow for the installation, exhibition and dismantling of the artwork (Source: Prefecture of Police):

  • During installation and dismantling (from 11 May to 5 June and until 13 July): the Pont Neuf will be completely closed to all traffic (vehicles, bicycles and pedestrians) between the Quai du Louvre and the Place du Pont-Neuf-Christo-et-Jeanne-Claude
  • During the event: the bridge is reserved for pedestrians and must be crossed in a one-way direction (entry via the Left Bank / Place du Pont-Neuf, exit via the Right Bank / Samaritaine)
  • Vehicular traffic: a restricted zone (Quais de l’Horloge and des Orfèvres, Rue de Harlay) limits vehicle access for the duration of the event
  • From 11 May to 13 July 2026, buses 27, 58 and 70 will be diverted via Boulevard du Palais, whilst the Pont Neuf station (L7) will remain open, with exits 2 and 3 closed during the event
