‘Only Paris is worthy of Rome, only Rome is worthy of Paris’: the two capitals celebrate seven decades of a historic and exclusive friendship

In 2026, the exclusive twinning between Paris and Rome will celebrate its 70th anniversary. To honour this historic bond sealed in 1956, the two capitals are rolling out a major cultural and festive programme throughout the year. The official kick-off in Paris will take place on 30 January 2026 (29 January 2026 in Rome) with the illumination of the façade of Paris City Hall in the colours of Italy and the Eternal City. This symbolic gesture marks the beginning of a series of highlights: a concert by Nicola Piovani at the Théâtre de la Ville on 23 February 2026, ITALISSIMO Italian literature festival in Paris from 7 to 12 April 2026, the return of the Dolcevita-sur-Seine open-air film festival from 2 to 6 July 2026, an exhibition on the railings of the Hôtel de Ville in partnership with the Italian Cultural Centre, an exhibition on the banks of the Seine...
Various locations in Paris: Paris City Hall and its library, Théâtre de la Ville, banks of the Seine, Italian Cultural Institute, Cie Flies...

🌟 Gallo-Roman Paris: in the footsteps of Lutetia 🌟

From the Left Bank to the Île de la Cité, Paris still hides the remains of its ancient ancestor. Explore the tiers of the Arènes de Lutèce, the vaults of the Thermes de Cluny, or the foundations of the city at the Archaeological Crypt.

The walk continues to Square Samuel-Paty opposite the Capitoline Wolf (symbol of the twinning with Rome), along Rue Saint-Jacques - the former Cardo Maximus of the Empire - to the site of the Forum of Lutetia under Rue Soufflot.
