A veritable open-air bookshop, the bouquinistes of Paris stretch for almost 3 kilometers along the banks of the Seine, between the Pont-Marie and the Quai du Louvre on the right bank, and from the Quai de la Tournelle to the Quai Voltaire on the left bank. Their emblematic silhouette - large, wagon-green boxes fixed to the parapets - punctuates strolls along the water's edge and contributes to the visual identity of the Parisian landscape. The history of bouquinistes dates back to the XVIᵉ century, with peddlers selling books and engravings on the capital's bridges. Permanently installed on the quays from the XIXᵉ century onwards, today they embody a living heritage, recognized in 2019 as France's intangible cultural heritage. With nearly 240 bouquinistes and 900 boxes, this "world's largest open-air bookshop" offers over 300,000 books, ranging from antiquarian editions to rare editions, posters, postcards, engravings, stamps and collectibles. But the bouquinistes are more than just a market for second-hand books: they're also a symbol of Parisian cultural and literary life, a place to stroll that attracts both enlightened enthusiasts and the simply curious. Part of a UNESCO World Heritage site, bouquinistes perpetuate a Parisian art de vivre where history, literature and heritage come together. Strolling along the quaysides, between the capital's monuments and stalls laden with treasures, remains an unmissable experience for any visitor to Paris.
