The Cognacq-Jay Museum, in the heart of the Marais, recreates the atmosphere of a Parisian residence during the Age of Enlightenment. Housed in a beautiful 16th-century townhouse, nestled between a courtyard and a garden, the museum features an exceptional collection of 18th-century artworks: paintings by Boucher, Chardin, and Fragonard; drawings by Watteau; sculptures; hallmarked furniture; and precious objects (jewelry, snuffboxes, Saxon porcelain, etc.). Ernest Cognacq and his wife Louise Jay, founders of the La Samaritaine department store, bequeathed the collections to the City of Paris in 1928.
