Musée Carnavalet - Histoire de Paris

Housed in the Carnavalet and Le Peletier de Saint-Fargeau buildings in the heart of the Marais, the Carnavalet Museum is the premier destination for the history of Paris. Its collections, which include approximately 640,000 works, make it one of France’s leading museums. Paintings, sculptures, furniture, woodwork, decorative and historical art objects, signs, photographs, drawings, prints, posters, medals, coins, archaeological collections... 3,800 works are displayed in an exceptional historic setting, allowing visitors to journey through the capital, from prehistory to the present day.

The history of Paris is recounted in a unique and vivid way: at once historical, documentary, sentimental, and close to the hearts of Parisians.

Organized along a continuous chronological timeline, the tour of the Carnavalet Museum—History of Paris reveals its greatest historical treasures: a Neolithic canoe, a portrait of Madame de Sévigné by Claude Lefèbvre, Jean-Jacques-François Le Barbier’s painting of the Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen, donated to the museum by Georges Clémenceau, the interior design of the Fouquet jewelry store, created in 1901 by Alfonse Mucha; the famous sign for the cabaret Le Chat Noir, created by the painter Adolphe-Léon Willette; and Marcel Proust’s bedroom.

Two major temporary exhibitions are presented each year.

Opening times and prices

The permanent collections of the City of Paris’s museums are open to the public free of charge. Temporary exhibitions are free for visitors under 18.

The Musée Carnavalet is currently closed for renovation work; reopening is planned for spring - summer 2021.
