A Look Back at Alberto Giacometti's Surrealist Years

With “Giacometti the Surrealist,” the Giacometti Institute looks back on a pivotal period in Alberto Giacometti’s career. The exhibition highlights the years during which the Swiss sculptor was associated with the Surrealist group and developed a profoundly innovative artistic language, marked by an exploration of the unconscious, dreams, and desire. The exhibition brings together sculptures, drawings, archives, and documents that bear witness to this particularly prolific creative phase. Iconic works interact with rarer pieces to demonstrate how Giacometti gradually broke free from the movement’s conventions to forge a personal body of work that would leave a lasting mark on the history of modern art. The exhibition thus sheds new light on the connections between formal experimentation, poetry, and the imagination.
