The Musée des Plan-Reliefs preserves and presents a collection unique in the world: historical models of fortified cities and surrounding countryside, made between the reigns of Louis XIV and Napoleon III, on the same scale (1 / 600e) and with the same techniques. The relief planes were mainly used as military planning tools and were also an attribute of the prestige of the heads of state. Today, they are an irreplaceable source documentary on the sites they represent and a valuable teaching tool. Through these models, the visitor has an aerial view of cities, their buildings, their fortifications, and landscapes in which they fit. Masterpieces of miniaturization, the relief-planes thus make it possible to discover the aspect of Mont-Saint-Michel at the time of the Sun King or the face of Bayonne at the beginning of the 19th century. A refurbished introductory area also features a new presentation on the Alps, with two Alpine models - Mont-Dauphin and Fenestrelle - being brought out of storage. And to plunge into the heart of the models of Mont Saint-Michel (17th century) and Bayonne (19th century), multimedia terminals combining virtual reality and 3D digitisation are available to visitors, for an enriched exploration of the sites, in high definition.
