Since its opening in 1998, the mahJ has replaced as many temporary exhibition materials and installations as possible (showcases, frames, etc.). Since 2022, a number of actions have been implemented and instructions issued: replacement of all museum lighting with LEDs, selective sorting, printing on recycled paper, reduction of packaging, energy efficiency and the purchase of reconditioned IT tools. Incentives have been introduced to encourage soft mobility for employee journeys, and the mahJ is keen to offer vegetarian catering and limit waste at its events.
Carbon footprint
As part of the expansion project, the mahJ, supported by WeCount, carried out its first BEGES (greenhouse gas emissions or "carbon footprint") to measure the overall impact of its activities, define courses of action, reinforce those already in place and offer a more virtuous environment for visitors, while at the same time complying with the City of Paris' "Climate and Energy Plan". The result is a report that complies with the ESRS E1 standard (which measures the institution's overall impact on climate change and its strategy for reducing GHG emissions).
The 2024 assessment was structured around the various departments and exhibition projects. It was carried out on all three scopes: all direct and indirect sources of greenhouse gases (GHG) required for the mahJ's activities were assessed. Thus, in 2024, the mahJ's total emissions are 1,997 tonnes of CO2 equivalent, with an uncertainty rate of 17.6% (i.e. +/- 353 tonnes).
