‘The Mandarin Oriental is the Paris of today and tomorrow’ - Thierry Marx interview

The Mandarin Oriental Paris, a symbol of luxury and elegance, is a 5-star hotel on Rue Saint-Honoré Street near to Place Vendôme and the Louvre. Its different restaurants offer inventive dishes with amazing flavours, by famous chef and pioneer of molecular cuisine Thierry Marx. An exceptional place with an offer particularly adapted for business customers.

Why is your establishment so attractive to international business clients?
Thierry Marx: Our business lunches are held in our three restaurants, the Sur Mesure, the Camélia and the Honoré. They offer the possibility of having a gourmet meal served in less than an hour for a table of two. These are intimate and discreet places offering the privacy required for business clientele. Plus, our hotel and our restaurants have sleek and modern interiors. With open, aesthetic and informal spaces, they perfectly encapsulate the Paris of today and tomorrow. Finally, our establishment offers cutting-edge technology for meetings in flexible event spaces.

What is the particular hallmark of your events and business offer?
Thierry Marx: The restaurants Sur Mesure and Camélia are available for full-private hire for large business lunch events, which is still exceptional and rare in Paris. For important events with more than ten or so guests, we host business clients in our private rooms which offer the same cuisine as the Camélia; in other words, an upscale offer, equivalent to the quality in our restaurants. We have four highly-functional rooms that adapt to all types of meetings: the Jasmin (70m²) as well as the Darjeeling, the Oolong and the Ginseng – three rooms all with a surface area of 40m² and two of which have communicating doors. Located on the first floor of the hotel, they have views of the landscaped inner garden and benefit from natural light. We also have a terrace on the sixth floor for private cocktail receptions and business events. Finally, the inner garden of the hotel can also be privately hired for cocktail receptions or VIP evenings.

What parallels are there between your restaurant offer and your hotel offer?
Thierry Marx: The restaurant offer at the Mandarin Oriental echoes the philosophy of the hotel and the Mandarin Oriental group in general: a subtle blend of tradition and modernity. The two are quite complementary. The cuisine of the Sur Mesure is appreciated for its innovative character and attention to textures and temperatures ... That of the Camélia is characterized by its simplicity, and readable and accessible offer, and the Honoré by its healthy dishes and informality.

What are you intending to do to increase your appeal to business clients?
Thierry Marx: We are working to develop a more bespoke offer, as we did for the end of year festive period for example, when we offered a very varied choice of exceptional menus, especially suited to end-of-year company social events, when companies get their colleagues together for a meal. We are working more on the seasonality of our offer but also on menus that combine pleasure and well-being with a wide choice of dishes such as vegan, detox, etc.
