Gueules de sport : Lauren Rembi

A talented French fencer, Lauren Rembi has not qualified for the Paris 2024 Games. Yet she is the embodiment of sportsmanship, fighting spirit and Olympic values.

Present since the first Modern Games in Athens in 1896 and Paris in 1924, fencing is one of the flagship disciplines of the Olympic Games. Athletes compete in individual and team events in three distinct disciplines: foil, epee and sabre.

One thing is certain: France shines particularly brightly in this sport, having won a total of 123 Olympic medals even before this new edition! Once again, the French have a great chance of winning this year. And that's not going to displease Lauren Rembi, one of the most brilliant athletes, although she won't be taking part in the competition.

A passion for fencing

After undergoing knee surgery and being late for the qualifiers, fencer Lauren Rembi unfortunately did not get her ticket to take part in the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games. Despite the disappointment, the woman who finished fourth at the Rio Games and won several European and French titles in the team and individual competitions can only look back on the positives.
In fact, she is one of her sport's most valiant ambassadors: "I love fencing because it's a sport where you have to think. You have to be skilful, patient, tactical and also physical. It's a very complete sport.

A lover of Paris

Trained at Bondy, the 32-year-old fencer now trains at the fencing gym at la Cité Universitaire. This huge park - the third largest in Paris - is a haven of peace just a stone's throw from the hustle and bustle.
While there are some forty magnificent pavilions designed to accommodate students, what Lauren appreciates most is the peaceful atmosphere: close to the ring road, surrounded by trees, with people playing pétanque or running around. Just a stone's throw away is another park that she loves: le Parc Montsouris, where she used to walk her dog. "We'd go into the park and then into a very charming little street right next door with beautiful houses, full of flowers, very pleasant. Especially in summer."

In Paris and in more and more towns and villages, sport is taking pride of place, and the Olympic Games are no stranger to it. "Today, there are so many sporting disciplines open to everyone, regardless of age, sex or disability. It's not just reserved for a social elite. Sport is an opportunity and you have to take advantage of it" explains Lauren.

In addition to the infrastructure, energy and fervour, the Olympic Games create a certain positive buzz around sportspeople, something that this athlete, who is also a student lawyer, welcomes. "We're seeing more and more athletes supported by companies and towns. It helps sportspeople to make a living from their passions." Financial support, flexible working hours... Athletes are increasingly integrated into a positive dynamic and put in the spotlight, even though they often combine their sporting career with another professional activity.

The fencing competitions take place from Saturday 27 July to Sunday 4 August at the Grand Palais. There's no doubt that Lauren Rembi will be Team France's first supporter on this wonderful adventure!
