On Chaillot hill, facing the Eiffel Tower, in the east wing of the Palais de Tokyo is the Musée d’Art Moderne de Paris, also known by the acronym MAM. The museum, housed in this sublime Art Deco building built for the 1937 International Exhibition of the Arts and Techniques of Modern, was officially inaugurated in 1961.
Divided into two sections – modern and contemporary -, the permanent collection focuses mainly on works characteristic of the various artistic movements of the 20th and 21st centuries since the birth of Fauvism in 1908: the Paris schools, Cubism, Abstraction, New Realism, Narrative Figuration, Kineticism and many others. Paintings, sculptures, installations, photographs, videos... and accounts for more than 15,000 works.
So, the visitor can admire masterpieces by Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse, Maurice de Vlaminck, Georges Rouault, Fernand Léger, Georges Braque, Amedeo Modigliani, Yves Klein ... Not-to-miss works include ‘La Danse’ by Henri Matisse, ‘La femme aux yeux bleus’ by Amedeo Modigliani, ‘Le Mur de peintures’ by Daniel Buren, ‘Les disques’ by Fernand Léger and ‘La Fée électricité’ by Raoul Dufy.
The museum also offers a programme of temporary exhibitions that highlight the vitality of modern and contemporary art.
From 10am to 6pm. From 10am to 9.30 pm Thursday (for temporary exhibitions). Closed on Monday, 25 December, 1 January and 1 May. From 10am to 5pm 24 and 31 December.
