The Musée de l’Armée, a world-class military history museum

Located in the prestigious Hôtel national des Invalides, built by Louis XIV in 1670, the Musée de l'Armée is one of the largest military museums in the world.  Its collection, devoted to the military history of France, consists of some 500,000 items from the Bronze age to the present day. The permanent collection comprises arms, armour, uniforms and military decorations as well as paintings, sculptures, prints, photographs, manuscripts and more.

Among the Museum’s treasures, don’t miss seeing the Hounskull bascinet (1350-1380), the ‘armour with lions’ attributed to François I (1494-1547), the ‘armour of the Dauphin’ attributed to the future Henri II (1519-1559), the painting The Battle of Cassel by Joseph Parrocel (1679-1680), the painting Napoleon on the Throne by Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres (1806), and the Collar of the Grand Master of the Légion d'honneur belonging to Napoleon Bonaparte (1807).

All year round, the Museum organizes a varied programme of events including temporary exhibitions, talks, concerts, activities for children and families, as well as sound and light shows and historical re-enactments.
