The district is named after the former central covered market of Paris, nicknamed ‘the belly of Paris’ and finally transferred to Rungis (Val-de-Marne) in the early 1970s. Les Halles, in the 1st arrondissement of Paris, is home to the Westfield Forum des Halles (a large shopping centre with a cinema with over 30 screens, an indoor swimming pool and the Forum des Images), numerous restaurants, countless bars and trendy boutiques... as well as the world's largest underground railway station, Châtelet - Les Halles. Rue Montorgueil, Rue Quincampoix, Rue Tiquetonne and Rue Saint-Denis are particularly pleasant places to take an impromptu stroll through the district. The Les Halles district, redesigned in 2018, is resolutely modern, lively and dynamic, with a large garden, a pedestrian area, a modern underground station and the Canopée, a superb building with plant-inspired curves covering the new Forum des Halles. The Bourse de Commerce, a temple to contemporary art, also opened its doors in 2021. Not far from Les Halles are the cathedral of Notre-Dame de Paris, the Tour Saint-Jacques and the Centre Pompidou.
