Since the beginning of the 1980s, the south-east area of Paris has been undergoing tremendous changes (construction of the Palais Omnisports de Paris-Bercy, Bibliothèque Nationale de France etc...) In 1986, the construction of the Pont Charles de Gaulle was decided. It was planned to double the Pont d'Austerlitz-the most traffic-laden in the capital- in order to provide a better link between the areas of Bercy and Paris-Rive Gauche, as well as the Lyon and Austerlitz stations. The works begun in 1993 were completed in 1996.
