The square borders on boulevard Saint-Germain and it’s here that the church of Saint-Germain-des-Prés was built – on the site of an abbey of the same name, founded in the 6th century by Merovingian king Childeric and Saint Germain, bishop of Paris. Next to the church, square Laurent Prache features Pablo Picasso’s statue of Dora Maar, dedicated to the poet Guillaume Apollinaire, and a bronze Prométhée, by Ossip Zadkine, as well as stone vestiges from the abbey. On the opposite side of the square, you can take a break at the literary cafe Les Deux Magots, frequented by famous 20th-century writers and intellectuals, or the restaurant La Société for a drink or a bite to eat.
