The Boulevard Saint Michel forms one of the major North/South routes with the boulevard de Sébastopol. Due to its central position and its proximity to the Sorbonne University, the northern part, in particular, of the Boulevard Saint Michel is sprinkled with bookshops and shops with products of a cultural nature. The Boulevard Saint Michel was also one of the major places for confrontations during the student demonstrations of May 68.
