In summer 2026, Paris will open 11 swimming sites - including 3 in the Seine, for a historic return to swimming in the Seine!

Starting July 4, 2026, Paris invites freshwater enthusiasts to a unique event that builds on the sustainable legacy of the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games: officially authorized swimming in the Seine and other urban bodies of water. Eleven supervised swimming areas will open starting in July 2025. Among them are three new sites developed along the Seine: Bercy (12th arrondissement) with its two pools featuring an urban beach and a view of the François-Mitterrand Library; Louis-Philippe (4th arrondissement) under the bridge of the same name (replacing the Bras Marie site), right in the heart of historic Paris; and the Bras de Grenelle (15th arrondissement), located across from the Parisian Statue of Liberty and ideal for families. These developments have been made possible by a large-scale plan to clean up the Seine. In addition, well-known sites such as the Bassin de la Villette, the Canal Saint-Martin (open during heat waves starting June 17, 2026), and several urban beaches also welcome swimmers. Clearly marked, free, accessible, supervised areas that undergo daily health inspections ensure a completely safe experience. It’s the perfect opportunity to enjoy a refreshing summer without leaving the city!
Louis-Philippe Bridge/Bras Marie: 8am-6pm. Bercy: 11am-9pm. Grenelle: 10am-5.30pm (4.45pm on Saturdays). Bassin de la Villette: 11am-9pm. Canal Saint-Martin on Sundays from 2pm to 6pm. Please note that swimming in the Canal Saint-Martin is permitted from 3pm to 9pm during heat waves, starting June 17, 2026.

⚠️ Safety rules to follow

Access to urban swimming areas is strictly regulated to ensure everyone’s safety and to prevent the emergency services from becoming overwhelmed. Before taking a dip, please familiarise yourself with the mandatory guidelines.

Generally speaking in Paris

  • Preserving emergency services’ capacity: we appeal to everyone’s sense of responsibility to avoid risky behaviour so as not to overwhelm the region’s hospitals. To adapt your activities, please do not hesitate to consult your hotels or professional tourist guides
  • Hydration: remember to drink water very regularly without waiting until you feel thirsty, and avoid alcohol, which accelerates dehydration

At the Canal Saint-Martin

  • Monitored area: on the Canal Saint-Martin, swimming is permitted and supervised only within the designated area stretching from 116 to 126 Quai de Jemmapes (10th arrondissement, Paris)
  • Strict ban on jumping: it is strictly forbidden to dive or jump from bridges, footbridges or any other structure on the Canal Saint-Martin. The shallow depth of the water poses a risk of serious injury and endangers other users on the water
  • Prohibited equipment: buoys, air mattresses and other inflatable objects are not permitted in the water of the Canal Saint-Martin
  • Danger near the locks: Utmost caution is required near the locks on the Canal Saint-Martin due to strong water movements and sudden currents generated by their operation
  • Weather conditions: Swimming in the Canal Saint-Martin is strictly prohibited during thunderstorms
  • Hygiene measures: it is recommended that you take a soapy shower immediately after leaving the Canal Saint-Martin. Water points and soap are provided on site for this purpose
