Back machine #2: the typewriter

A dive into the history of the keyboard

Starting November 25, 2025, the Cité des Sciences et de l’Industrie will dedicate the next installment of its “Machine Arrière” series to the typewriter. The exhibition takes visitors on a journey back in time, from our modern keyboards to the first typewriters of 1936, tracing the evolution of writing and communication tools. Through a dynamic exhibition design—featuring historical objects, graphic murals, and sound installations—the exhibition explores not only technical innovations but also the social transformations linked to the work of typing. It offers a nostalgic and informative immersion into how a simple keyboard has shaped the way we write.
