A fascinating journey through ancient Mesopotamia, where humans made their first attempts to control water
“Primevial Waters. Lessons from Mesopotamia,” on view at the Louvre Museum through 15 March 2027, offers an environmental and historical reflection on the crucial role of water in ancient Mesopotamia. Drawing on the department’s rich collections, the exhibition explores the dual nature of this element - both a source of life and a force of destruction - while examining how the peoples of Mesopotamia invented the first hydraulic structures (canals, aqueducts, artificial lakes) to control their environment. By drawing a parallel between the lessons of antiquity and the environmental challenges of our contemporary era, the exhibition invites visitors to rediscover Eastern antiquities from a new perspective: that of the sustainable management of a vital resource.
