From Prague to Montmartre: Rediscover Georges Kars, a major figure of the School of Paris who has been forgotten

From 15 October to 14 March 2027, the Musée d’art et d’histoire du Judaïsme (Museum of Jewish Art and History) is presenting a major retrospective dedicated to the Czech painter Georges Kars, a leading figure of the School of Paris. Trained in Munich and later based in Paris, the artist moved through Expressionism and Cubism to develop a refined figurative style characterized by a generous treatment of form. Surrounded by the greatest names of the avant-garde- such as Guillaume Apollinaire, Maurice Utrillo, Suzanne Valadon, and Marc Chagall - he embodied the creative effervescence of the interwar years before falling into obscurity in 1945. More than 150 paintings, drawings, and archival documents reveal the fascinating journey of the painter who built a bridge between the artistic scenes of Prague and Paris in the early 20th century.
