From 23 to 25 August 2026

Paris is celebrating the anniversary of its Liberation with official ceremonies, historical tributes, and commemorative events throughout the capital

Every year at the end of August, the City of Paris commemorates its Liberation, which took place in August 1944. On this occasion, several official ceremonies and patriotic tributes are held at highly symbolic sites throughout the capital: the plaza in front of City Hall, the Jardin des Combattants-de-la-Nueve, Place du 18 Juin 1940, the Marshal Leclerc monument, and in front of Paris’s commemorative plaques… A solemn and shared moment of remembrance celebrating the restoration of freedom. The commemorations will conclude on Tuesday, August 25, 2026, with an open-air screening - beginning at 9pm on the City Hall square (Esplanade de la Libération) - of Volker Schlöndorff’s film *Diplomacy*.
