It was at this location in the Père Lachaise cemetery that the last Communards were shot by the Versaillais on 28 May 1871 during the Paris Commune. The bodies were thrown into a trench dug at the foot of the wall. Since 1880, it has been a place of commemoration, symbolizing the People's struggle for freedom.
