Did you know?
Intellectuals and scientists have passed through the church of Saint-Germain-des-Prés. Such was the case of Dom Bernard de Montfaucon, born in 1655. This Benedictine monk was one of the founding fathers of scientific archaeology. He was the first to set out to excavate the site of Olympia, the birthplace of Olympism. In vain, he died in the church of Saint-Germain-des-Prés in 1741, where his body now lies. It was the Englishman Richard Chandler who discovered Olympia a little later, in 1766.
