MONUMENT

Colonne Vendôme

Place Vendôme - 75001 Paris Louvre
Just a few minutes' walk from the Place de la Concorde and the Tuileries Gardens, the Vendôme Column stands in the centre of the Place Vendôme, a symbol of luxury throughout the world and a major site of the French Revolution. It was in 1810 that the current 44-metre-high column, inaugurated by Napoleon 1st, was placed at the centre of the Place Vendôme. Dedicated to the victorious soldiers of the battle of Austerlitz, it was inspired by the Trajan column in Rome. Its shaft, made up of bronze plates spiralling around the monument, was cast from the bronze of 1,200 cannons taken from the Russian and Austrian armies. It is decorated with antique-style bas-reliefs depicting trophies.
