The July Column, erected on the site of the former Bastille prison, commemorates the victims of the ‘Three Glorious Days’ of the French Revolution of 1830. Inaugurated in1840, the famous monument is a prominent landmark in the Bastille district and is surmounted with the Génie de la Liberté (the ‘Spirit of Freedom’) synonymous with the Paris landscape. The lower parts of this monumental column can be discovered during a fascinating guided tour (no self-guided tours) led by a guide, at weekends only. A unique historical and architectural testimony of the 19th century.
