Since its construction, Versailles has hosted countless shows and parties, but until 1770, these were all held in temporary locations. But in 1770, to celebrate the marriage of the soon-to-be-King Louis XVI to Marie-Antoinette of Austria, the Opéra Royal du Château de Versailles was opened and rapidly became one of the most beautiful halls in Europe. All of the 18th century's finest composers, such as Lully, Rameau and more, were showcased there.
Today, Château de Versailles Spectacles brings this venue back to life and every year for its musical season and for Versailles Festival welcomes famous conductors, orchestras and performers, among them Cecilia Bartoli, Jordi Savall, Sir John Eliot Gardiner, Lang Lang, Robert King, William Christie, Leonardo Garcia Alarcon, Ton Koopman, Diego Fasolis, Philippe Jaroussky, Max Emanuel Cencic, Joyce DiDonato, Jonas Kaufmann and Franco Fagioli.
