Château de Fontainebleau

The residence of 34 kings and two emperors, Fontainebleau is the only château that was lived in by every French monarch for more than eight centuries.
With 1500 rooms, it is one of the biggest châteaux in France, and the most furnished in Europe. Testimony to the life of the official and initimate courts of the monarchs across the centuries, it embodies better than anywhere else the French 'art de vivre'. Discover the Renaissance masterpieces commissioned by François I, the major projects of Henri IV, the refined decoration of Marie Antoinette, Napoleon I's apartment, the splendour of Napoleon III and Eugenie, etc.
Situated in a park of 130 hectares, the château spreads its architecture around four main courtyards and is at the heart of three historic gardens including the largest parterre in Europe (11 hectares), the work of André Le Nôtre.

Opening times and prices

Free for under 26s who are EU resisdents, and children (under 18).

Free entry the first Sunday of the month (except in July and August).
Free for citizens of the European Union aged under 26 and primary or secondary school teachers (excluding temporary exhibitions).
Free for disabled visitors and an accompanying person, jobseekers and those receiving French welfare benefits.

Ticket for the Grands Appartements, including the Pope's apartment, the Renaissance rooms, the Saint-Saturnin chapel, the royal apartments, the Diana Gallery, Napoleon's inner apartment and the Napoleon Museum: €14 (Reduced rate: €12).
One hour before the château closes: €12 for everyone.

Open every day except Tuesdays, 1 January, 1 May and 25 December.

Wednesday to Monday: 9.30am-5pm (October to March) or 9.30am-6pm (April to September). Last entry 45 minutes before closing. Courtyards and gardens: every day, 9am-5pm (November to February), 9am-6pm (March, April and October) or 9am-7pm (May to September). Park: every day, 24 hours.
