The area around Notre-Dame Cathedral is set to undergo an ambitious metamorphosis from 2027, with the aim of creating a setting worthy of this iconic monument and offering a new welcome to the millions of visitors who come here every year. With its emphasis on green spaces, including an internal promenade and a new layout for the old car park, the project will strengthen the link between the cathedral and the Seine.
A first tangible step in this transformation is already evident in the redevelopment of Rue du Cloître-Notre-Dame, which is now pedestrianised, wider and lined with greenery, offering a calmer flow of traffic and a more pleasant experience for visitors.
The railings surrounding the cathedral, which had been hidden from view since the 2019 fire, are once again visible to visitors, marking a symbolic step forward in the rediscovery of the monument.
The overall project, estimated at around €50 million, will span several years and includes, in particular, the transformation of the tip of the Île de la Cité, with more green spaces and a seamless landscape between neighbouring squares.
Ultimately, up to 160 trees will be planted and the former underground car park will be converted into a visitor centre to enhance the visitor experience.
This vast project, coordinated with the restoration work on the building, should be largely completed by 2030.
