Since 2005, the Environmental Charter of the Hotelier recommends 65 actions to be implemented by the establishments to effectively reduce their impact on the environment (glass recycling, recovery of rainwater, use of ecolabelled products, etc.).
Each year, the hoteliers indicate the actions of the Environmental Charter that are implemented, so as to evaluate their performance compared to the previous year and in relation to their area. In addition to a reporting tool, the Environmental Charter is a management tool.
This Charter was updated in 2011 and renamed as part of the Group's new PLANET21 strategy. The indicators have been updated and extended to societal actions such as the integration of fair trade products, the organization of training for health and well-being, etc .; keeping 65 checkpoints.
Charter 21 is now structured in 5 parts: management, energy, water, waste, products.
Charter 21 gives hotels a framework of actions for their sustainable development approach, helping them to progress and monitor their performance over time. To encourage hotels to rely on the Charter 21, AccorHotels has developed a system of Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum levels to accompany hotels in the gradual deployment of actions first basic and then more and more thorough. The level system is cumulative: the hotel must first validate one level before being able to access the next one.
This approach of support and continuous improvement shows today convincing results in terms of dissemination of good practices since today 89% of the hotels have at least the Bronze level. Since 2013, the reality of the implementation of the first ten actions of the Charter 21 to reach the Bronze level is audited by an external firm as part of the quality audits.
