Sustainable Paris

Parisian key players pursue their commitment to more sustainable tourism.

THE SUSTAINABLE TOURISM CONFERENCE

Stéphane Laure

On July 1, 2021, the Sustainable Tourism Conference organized by the City of Paris and Paris je t'aime - Tourist Office mobilized over a hundred players from the Parisian tourism ecosystem to discuss local, innovative, ecological and responsible initiatives, with the aim of driving a co-constructed and concerted transition towards 'more sustainable tourism.

Discussions focused on three main themes, and over 70 commitments were made collectively:

  • Better experience Paris as a destination
  • Paris with a positive and sustainable impact
  • Resilience and transformation"

These actions are detailed in the Sustainable Tourisme Conference White Paper.

Two years after the Assises and just under a year before the start of the Olympic and Paralympic Games, the City of Paris and Paris je t'aime - Office de tourisme took stock of the implementation of this roadmap at the event "Two years of the Sustainable Tourisme Conference", held on June 14 at the Académie du Climat.

Three workshops were held on the following themes:

  • Cycle tourism
  • Sustainable water management
  • Hospitality Manifesto

Each of these workshops brought together around ten qualified players, and produced concrete recommendations to be followed in order to advance the sustainable transformation of Parisian tourism.

At the end of these workshops, Frédéric Hocquard, Deputy Mayor of Paris in charge of tourism and nightlife, and Corinne Menegaux, Managing Director of Paris je t'aime - Tourist Office, hosted a plenary session attended by over 300 Paris tourism professionals. Dan Lert, Deputy Mayor of Paris in charge of the ecological transition, the Climate Plan, water and energy, also spoke about the current revision of the city's Climate Plan, as did Jérémie Almosni, Regional Director of ADEME Ile-de-France.

GDS INDEX

Paris je t'aime

After jumping 30 places in 2022 (from 55th to 25th), Paris continues to climb the GDS Index rankings, reaching 21st place this year with 80.12% completion of sustainability criteria, compared with 74.34% last year, an increase of 7.77%.

The GDS Index is the leading international ranking system for analyzing and improving the sustainability performance of destinations, and brings together cities that recognize the urgent need to reinvent themselves. The 70 criterias that make up the GDS Index cover environmental performance, social progress, supply chain performance in the meetings and conventions industry, and the responsible commitments of local tourist offices and DMOs (Destination Management Organisations).

Corinne Menegaux, Managing Director of Paris je t'aime - Tourist Office:

"We're delighted to see that our efforts to make Paris a more sustainable destination have been recognized. Our goal this year was to achieve a score of at least 80%, and we've done it! But above all, this annual ranking enables us to clearly identify the areas for improvement on which we can focus in the months ahead.

In particular, Paris improved its score in the "Destination Management Performance" section (+5 points) thanks to our work on the CSR charter and sustainable purchasing policy, and in the "Supplier Performance" section (+27 points) thanks to the work carried out on the Sustainable Development program with our members.

Eight French destinations (Lyon, Marseille, Paris, Strasbourg, Toulouse, Nantes, Nice, Bordeaux) are involved in the "GDS Movement" and have set up a working group to take collective action to make France a destination for responsible tourism and events. The aim of this collaboration is to pool practices, training and projects ever more closely.
