Perfumes of the East

Institut du monde arabe, 1 rue des Fossés Saint-Bernard - 75005 Paris
From September 26, 2023 to March 17, 2024

A unique exhibition traces the history of perfumes and their importance in the Arab world.

The exhibition Perfumes of the East takes visitors on a unique journey into the history of perfumes in the Arab world, from, from the Near East and Arabia to India, and from Indonesia to the Mediterranean Basin. Presented at the Institut du Monde Arabe over an area of 1,000 m², the show brings together almost 200 ancient and contemporary works, including miniatures, manuscripts, textiles, paintings, photographs, videos, and installations. Scent devices and fragrances created by perfumer Christopher Sheldrake transport visitors to the very heart of perfumes of the East. Along the way, visitors discover the origins of the raw materials and precious essences used in perfumes, the atmosphere of the perfumer's souk and that of the Arab-Muslim home, where perfume is an integral part of ancient rituals.
