Premiered in 1951 at La Fenice in Venice, The Rake's Progress is the first English opera composed by Igor Stravinsky, the famous composer of The Rite of Spring. Inspired by a series of engravings by William Hogarth entitled ‘The Career of the Debauched’, the opera is about the downfall of a wealthy heir, a libertine and idler, who ruins himself by gambling and frequenting brothels. The Rake's Progress is presented from 30 November to 23 December 2024 at the Palais Garnier, directed by Olivier Py.
