Fela Anikulapo-Kuti - Afrobeat rebellion

Philharmonie de Paris, 221 avenue Jean Jaurès - 75019 Paris
From October 20, 2022 to June 11, 2023

The Philharmonie de Paris celebrates Fela Kuti, Nigerian musician and activist, with a new exhibition.

Fela Kuti, inventor of afrobeat, was also a thinker inspired by the Pan-Africanism of Malcom X and Cheikh Anta Diop and a citizen musician against injustice. Fela Kuti denounced the corruption of the elites and neo-colonialism in both his lyrics and his speeches, and has left an international musical and political legacy. From his home in Kalakuta Republic, a suburb of Lagos, the artist made powerful statements, accompanied by his family and members of his band. The exhibition traces his intellectual journey to understand the source and development of Afrobeat from the man who described music as « the weapon of the future ».
