Louis Janmot's work, ‘The Poem of the Soul’, presented in its entirety at Orsay Museum

‘The Poem of the Soul’ is the great life-long project of the artist Louis Janmot in the 19th century. Begun in 1835 and completed in 1881, this ambitious work, consisting of 34 pictorial productions (18 paintings and 16 drawings) accompanied by a poem of more than 2,000 verses, recounts the initiatory journey of a soul on Earth. As much a literary work as a graphic one, ‘The Poem of the Soul’ also draws on philosophy and religion. The Musée d’Orsay presents the two cycles of this work reminiscent of William Blake and Francisco de Goya. A singular and hybrid work, it takes visitors on a journey that feels like a stroll.
