Parc des Buttes-Chaumont

The Parc des Buttes Chaumont, in north-east Paris, is one of the largest green spaces in Paris (25 hectares) and one of the most original. It was built on quarries, which explains its steepness and impressive gradient. It is very hilly, offering great views over the capital, particularly over the Montmartre district. The layout, with its grottoes and waterfalls, its suspension bridge and its folie perched on a belvedere, gives it a special charm. It is adorned with exotic and indigenous trees, and the many birds (seagulls, moorhens, mallards) share the area and enjoy the artificial lake. The park offers entertainment for children and food and drink outlets for gourmets. In fine weather, the Rosa Bonheur guinguette is a popular spot for Parisians to dance the night away.
